you'll never guess

I was going to use "Life is Short," by Butterfly Boucher, but my YouTube search revealed that it was featured in Grey's Anatomy, thus automatically disqualifying it.  I'll have to go with the obvious.

Week 37 Rules

Contributors: Please post a song that you consider "yours". Does that make sense? To put it another way, please post a song that when people hear it, you hope they think of you.
Next week Honey Bear will make the rules.

Blackmill.......

Really I have not found any music I have liked so far this year but this song and another song by bassnectar called "Iam a laser" have the two songs I have listened to nearly everyday this year.

Kanye

I don't know anything else from 2013 - it was either this or a podcast.

Leave No Cross Unturned

Well, it was a tough call, since there were some really highly anticipated albums that came out this year, and lots of good songs so far... but this is certainly one of the most fun albums of 2013! This song, the final track, is quite an epic romp through a few different riffs and tempos, all the while channeling the spirit of classic metal. The falsetto at the beginning might make you laugh, but scowling and having no fun in order to be metal is so 1993, and you can't deny how much the song rocks.

Cocknoose

I always preferred "Deathnoose" or "livin on the run," but the former isn't on YouTube and the latter is a David Allen Coe cover. I wanted a Cocknoose original.

Awkward Hearts

This is a great track off Samothrace's first album, "Life's Trade." These guys originated in Lawrence, although they ended up relocating to Seattle eventually, as have at least a couple of other homegrown metal acts from the Lawrence/KC area. I suppose that I can't blame them. They're probably my favorite band (originally) from Kansas, and a couple of them have always been friendly and talked to me at shows. That Midwestern friendliness is unparalleled. Anyway, these guys have put out a couple of excellent albums of stoner/doom metal, occasionally get a bit sludgy, but not overmuch. Highly recommended for when you want to hear something heavy but also chill out, if that makes sense.

Kill Creek

Considering that this is, like, one of my top 20 favorite songs of all time, I had to post it. Good luck finding some Black Label to post, Jae-Hak.

Week 35 Rules

Contributors: We're all from Kansas here. Please post a song by your favorite Kansas born artist. Or a band that has something to do with Kansas. You cannot post "Carry on My Wayward Son", of course, but almost anything else is fair game.

Langhorne Slim - ish

I fully admit to cheating here.  Then again, I listened to several Langhorne Slim songs yesterday at work and I wasn't too excited about any of them, on account of the fact that they aren't Yeezus.  Anyway, I always loved this Violent Femmes song.

Fuck off, Jack...

Sorry, I guess I just wasn't feeling the Jolie Holland stuff I was listening to. I tried a few songs... it's too delicate and pretty for how I'm doing right now. Roky is really speaking to me today, so I'm glad the fuck off + Roky option was there. Whew! Give me something easier next time!

Week 34 Rules

Contributors: You must post a song by an assigned artist this week. We did this once before in week six, only in that case the assignments were fairly simple - Garth Brooks, Peter Gabriel, etc. This week we're going to use lesser known artists. Please post your favorite song by the assigned artist. If you do not know the artist, please listen to five or six songs. If you're already familiar with the artist well, then feel free to tell me to fuck off, but if you do tell me to fuck off you must post a song by Roky Erickson.
Assignments:
Jack: David Grey
Honey Bear: Jolie Holland
Jae-Hak: Langhorne Slim
Kyanimal: Jens Lenkman
Soup: Kimya Dawson (the Juno song does not count)

Hurt

Now is the time to admit my woeful ignorance of Johnny Cash's oeuvre. Obviously I know stuff like "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" or "A Boy Named Sue" or "Folsom Prison Blues." I like all of the Johnny Cash that I know. But at this red hot moment, this song speaks to me, so here you go. The American Recordings albums are fantastic, so I'm not afraid to rep them here, even though it might have given me more cred if I'd picked something less known... ;)

The Rambler

I've always thought that this record should be considered a single.
